About Green Home
Green Home is more than a business, it's a social enterprise in Gulu City that seeks to elevate the standards of living of the people in Gulu City and Uganda in general through creating more employment opportunities for the empowerment of the youths and by recycling more plastics from Gulu.
What We Do
Green Home is plastic waste recycling social enterprise that deals in producing quality and sustainable building materials. The plastic wastes are collected from the different dumping sites in Gulu City by the employed Vulnerable People i.e. LRA's victims, women, and youths. Being able to produce construction materials that are nearly three times the strength of traditional concrete while removing plastic from the streets, creates a market advantage that can allow us to employ vulnerable individuals across Northern Uganda and Uganda at large at fair wages for many years to come. The Green Home employment model focuses on not only providing direct, gender-equal, full-time employment but also internship opportunities.
Who We Are
We are a social enterprise that has developed one solution for a plethora of issues that are faced in Uganda. As a company, we always put the environment and others above all in our decision-making. We believe that the way to a sustainable future is to prioritize our communities and the shared environment above all.
OUR VISION
To build a sustainable planet, a planet free of plastic wastes, by turning them into high-quality and sustainable construction materials at a time
OUR MISSION
To promote a circular economy by reducing plastic wastes that end in dumping sites, landfills, and drainage systems across the globe
HOW IT WORKS
Step One
Collecting plastic wastes from the various dumping sites (safely).
Step Two
Sort, shred, sieve sands, mixing sands with shredded plastics & melting the mixtures (safely)
Step Three
Mold into quality products e.g. Blocks, Bricks & Pavers.
OUR CORE VALUES
Our business model looks at both direct and indirect means to earn a wage, ensuring the community as a whole benefit from business growth. We believe through clever recycling programs and social development we have the chance to help reduce poverty by creating more employment opportunities for the vulnerable people in our community i.e. victims of LRA, women, and youths.
No change is lasting change unless it involves the community. Through training and social entrepreneurship, Green Home aims to make a lasting and positive impact on the communities we serve.
Many of the materials we use on daily basis have the capacity to be recycled. However, they are often thrown out or worse burnt, polluting our air and water sources. This is often due to limited education and facilities - Green Home aims to provide communities with employment opportunities, technical skills of recycling plastic wastes for the empowerment of the community, and rooms for internships for university students.
Traditional methods of making concrete construction materials cause environmental degradation, and harmful gases being released into the atmosphere. Green Home Construction materials have an opposite, positive effect on the environment.
ABOUT THE FOUNDER
In 2014, Bosco met with Matthew Sebastian the founder of Rationale International US, He then started bricks laying project in Bar-dege division with the support from his Father and Matthew Sebastian from the USA with the aim of income general and empowerment of vulnerable youths through employing them in bricks laying and also acquiring more technical skills. Later on, In 2019 he started carrying out research on a Solid Waste Management (SWM) with the pictures of producing building materials and organic fertilizers from wastes since it's a crucial function of local governments around the world and directly affects public health, the environment, and livelihoods. However, rapid urbanization and population growth place multiple pressures on solid waste management systems, particularly in cities in low- and middle-income countries. In particular, the urban poor is most affected by a lack of access to basic SWM services, such as waste collection and disposal or recycling them for sustainable use. Soon there later in 2019, he started piloting his project, starting with prototyping recycled products by the engagement of few volunteers in Gulu city.
